What Is Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

David Richards

Hypnosis is a psychological process where the mind’s critical thinking ability is bypassed and the subconscious takes center stage. Selective perception and thought are established. Hypnosis works while people are awake, allowing them to reach a relaxed state and putting all conscious thought aside.

Hypnosis – The Clinical Kind

Clinical hypnosis shouldn’t be confused with stage hypnosis. The latter is performed mainly for the purpose of entertaining. Magicians and other entertainers engage in stage hypnosis as part of their act.

In clinical hypnosis, no surrendering of one’s will to another individual is involved. The hypnosis doesn’t make people do something they’re unwilling to do. It’s not some kind of mind control, but more of a deep state of relaxation and inner concentration. The power of suggestion tends to be more easily accepted when a person is undergoing hypnosis.

In hypnosis, the focal point of the activity is the subconscious mind. It’s that part of the brain that runs in the background when a person is asleep or about to wake up. The subconscious mind is in control of exhalation and inhalation. This part of the mind is also responsible for sending and receiving various physical receptors. It is continually at work in the different activities a person does throughout his day.

The subconscious can be likened to a computer’s operating system. It’s busy running while the conscious part creates people’s individual behavioral executions. Psychiatrists and psychologists have often turned to clinical hypnosis for treating traumatized incest, rape and assault victims. Hypnosis can likewise be utilized for controlling pain. Women in labor as well as burn victims are also likely candidates for hypnosis sessions.

Clinical hypnosis is often used to achieve changes in people’s thought processes and behavior. The clinical version of hypnosis has proven useful in addressing a wide range of situations. Nevertheless, clinical hypnosis has been most commonly linked with effective stress management, weight control and smoking termination.

The mysteries of hypnosis haven’t completely been solved. Most people and experts continue to remain in the dark about some of its aspects. Still, plenty of clinicians have observed that hypnosis can be extremely effective despite not knowing the lowdown on how it works scientific-wise. A lot of people opt for hypnosis to alter behavior as with the abovementioned examples.

Prior to picking a hypnosis specialist, it’s always best to check their credentials. Verify that the person you’ve chosen is legit. They should be duly licensed (NOT MERELY certified) in the province or state where they’re practicing.
